Background Information

Aerith Gainsborough was born at Icicle Inn up north where her father, Professor Gast Faremis and Ifalna, who was the last remaining Cetra, resided. For some time, they lived in peace without any interruptions (namely ShinRa). This peace however is short-lived when they were tracked by ShinRa. Professor Hojo wanted Ifalna and Aerith as they are the last surviving Cetra. Gast however refused to give them up as they are his family and because he did, Hojo's henchmen shot and killed Gast. The two Cetra were taken to a ShinRa lab in Midgar, a city in the east, where Aerith and her mother were prisoners for seven long years.

Ifalna created a plan with Aerith to escape and not all had gone accordingly. On the way, Ifalna was severely wounded by a ShinRa employee. When the two finally reached the train station in the Slums, Ifalna had little time left alive with Aerith by her side. She entrusted a woman standing nearby, Elmyra Gainsborough, to take care of Aerith like a mother. When she agreed, Ifalna peacefully died.

Over the years, Elmyra cared and loved for Aerith as any mother would. As Aerith is the last remaining Cetra, she head the words of the Planet. Because of it, the Turks continued to pester Elmyra to let them have her as she is "extremely gifted." Of course she refused.

Aerith spent much of her time growing flowers in the church. It was said that nothing could grow in such a place like the Slums. Aerith however, was able to grow them due to her healing powers that did not allow any of them to wither. She sold these flowers on the street to anyone who was willing to buy.

Despite the many attempts of Aerith and Elmyra to live a peaceful life, ShinRa attempted to kidnap Aerith. Elmyra could not withstand the thought of Aerith being stolen from her so she gathered up what money she had and sent her off to Meillure Academy in Boston. She would rather have her daughter be thousands of miles away from her then in the hands of such a vile company as ShinRa.
